FANGØ
2020
FANGØ (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google Obfuscator) aims to disrupt the mechanics of surveillance capitalism. Similar to how industrial capitalism commodified nature and labor, surveillance capitalism turns private human experiences into tradeable commodities. By adding “noise” to captured data, FANGØ makes it difficult for data brokers to transform user data into predictable patterns, thereby devaluing the extracted data.
The project is entirely open-source, with all outcomes—including code and 3D printing models—freely distributed. It was developed within the framework of EMAP/EMARE residences with support from Onassis Stegi and funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media in the NEUSTART KULTUR program.
